Synopsis

Escambo is a citrus, tropical dance work created for open-air spaces. The piece treats the opening of the senses as a central element, inviting the audience into a play of scents, colours, rhythms and movement. By moving 50 oranges from their everyday context onto the stage, the work expands our notion of the everyday and proposes fresh aesthetic and sensory perceptions.

Escambo means “barter” in Portuguese and is structured as a choreographic board that releases colour into space through movement. A playful back-and-forth between the sensory, the architectural, the performers and the spectator.

The choreographic language draws on the work of visual artist and performer Hélio Oiticica, whose concept of the “participator-work” generates interaction between spectator and piece, breaking down the possible separation between the two and creating a language built through action and reaction.
